There were over 400 female playwrights in Britain between 1900 -1920 during a period that witnessed huge political and social change. The Actresses' Franchise League (AFL) was founded in 1908, membership was open to any woman who was or had been a professional actress, musician or music hall performer. The play 'Miss Appleyard's Awakening' was written in 1911 by AFL member Evelyn Glover (1874-1941) and first performed at the Rehearsal Theatre, London. The play is about an anti-suffrage campaigner who is collecting signatures for a petition and finds herself in the home of a sympathiser - she ends up drawing her hostesses' attention to the contradictions in her arguement. ... Here's a taster of what you can see if you visit our current exhibition - Women of Wealden Suffrage - exploring and celebrating the centenary of The Representation of the People Act 1918 which gave women the partial vote and all men over 30. The exhibition is supported by Girlguiding Uckfield District and The East Sussex Federation of Women's Institutes. We have a varied programme of talks next week - book on our website.
