A Journey Through The Archives

Thank you to all who came to our talk last night. We were treated to a journey through the Uckfield and District Preservation Society archives by our own Heritage Education Officer & Archivist Maria Kirk.

Maria shared with us the fascinating diaries of Uckfield business man George St. John Smith for 1872-1879. The St.John Family were from Haywards Heath originally until George St. John Smith decided to open his own chartered surveyors, auctioneers and valuers office in Uckfield. His diaries give us a fascinating insight into mid-Victorian family life. You can find out more about this family within vol 5 (page 36-39) of our journal Hindsight. Available to buy from our website, gift shop or Charity shop now.

Also shown were the Rocks Park Estate sale guide and map with over 2115 acres for sale. This sale was offered by auction by Messrs. St.John Smith & Son.

We hold regular monthly talks. See here for our programme: http://www.bridgecottageuckfield.co.uk/events/
